Compare the options

Porcelain or composite: compare the whole trade-off.

The material changes both the initial treatment and what maintenance may look like later. Neither is automatically the better choice for every tooth.

Materials

Porcelain

Custom ceramic can provide lifelike translucency and resistance to surface staining. It commonly involves a laboratory stage and may require enamel removal. If it chips or fails, repair can be less straightforward than polishing or adding to composite. Ask about the precise ceramic, preparation and replacement pathway rather than assuming every porcelain quote is equivalent.

Composite

Tooth-coloured resin can sometimes be placed in fewer visits and is often easier to repair or modify. It may stain, wear or need polishing earlier. Direct and indirect composite are not identical treatments, so ask how yours would be made and maintained.

Minimal-prep claims

“No-prep” is not a promise that treatment is reversible or suitable. Tooth position, enamel thickness, bite and the desired shape decide whether a conservative approach is feasible. Adding bulk to the wrong tooth can compromise appearance or cleanability. Request an explanation of how much enamel, if any, would be removed.

A fair comparison

Compare like with like: the same teeth, a named material, the same diagnostic and temporary stages, written repair terms and a plan for future review. Ask which option best meets your goal with the least necessary change to healthy tooth tissue.

Frequently asked questions

Is composite always cheaper than porcelain?

A starting quote may be lower, but the total comparison should include the specific technique, any later maintenance and the likelihood of repair or replacement for your case.

Why might a crown appear in a veneer treatment quote?

A veneer covers the front of a tooth; a crown covers more of it. A damaged or weakened tooth may need a different restoration. Ask which teeth need each procedure and why, with separate items in the quote.
