Before you consent

The consultation should clarify more than the shade.

A useful visit tests whether veneers are suitable at all. It should leave you with a diagnosis, alternatives, risks and a written estimate—not just a proposed smile image.

Consultation

First, assess the foundation

The dentist should check teeth, gums, enamel, bite, grinding and existing restorations. Active decay or gum disease may need treatment first. If your concern is mainly colour or alignment, ask whether whitening, bonding or orthodontics could meet the goal with less tooth alteration.

Then discuss the design

Which teeth would be treated? How will shade and proportions fit adjacent teeth? Can you preview the result? Is enamel removal expected, and how much? What is the plan for sensitivity, a high bite, a chipped veneer or a change in your gums over time? Ask who performs each stage and who you contact if there is a problem.

Consultation planning
Consultation planning

Leave with documents

Request the treatment plan, itemised quote, consent details, follow-up schedule and any care instructions in writing. If a choice feels rushed, it is reasonable to take time or seek another licensed dentist's opinion before an irreversible step.

Frequently asked questions

Can a consultation guarantee a result?

No. Planning improves communication, but shade, fit, tissue response and longevity cannot be guaranteed. The dentist should explain realistic limits and how adjustments are handled.
